Breast Cancer Risk Assessment

Are you at risk for cancer? How do you know? What can you do about it?

Our cancer risk assessment program can help you find answers to these questions.

You are probably familiar with some of the risk factors for breast and ovarian cancer, such as family history, age and reproductive history. You may have also heard about the discovery of certain genes that contribute to cancer risk. You may be wondering what this means for you.

Cancer risk assessment and genetic counseling require personal, confidential and thoughtful care from a team of specialists. Through the counseling sessions you will learn more about your risk for breast and ovarian cancer, and what you can do about it.

Cancer risk assessment includes:

  • A detailed evaluation of your family history
  • An assessment of your personal cancer risk for breast and ovarian cancer
  • A discussion of genetic testing (if applicable) including risks, benefits and limitations
  • A thorough review of personal screening and surveillance guidelines
  • A full written report summarizing your counseling sessions

While everyone has some risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer, the following factors may increase your risk:

  • Age
  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Family history
  • Reproductive history and hormone replacement therapy
  • Exposure to ionizing radiation
  • Lifestyle
